Chinese Proficiency Level

Chinese language proficiency is primarily measured using the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) system in mainland China, alongside alternative frameworks like Taiwan's TOCFL and the international CEFR standard.

1. HSK System (Mainland China)

China uses two main versions of the official HSK test: the classic 6-Level System (HSK 2.0) and the expanded "Three Stages, Nine Levels" Framework (HSK 3.0).

HSK 2.0 (Classic 6-Level Scale)

• HSK 1 – Beginner: ~150 words. Understand and use very basic words and phrases.

• HSK 2 – Elementary: ~300 words. Communicate in routine, simple daily situations.

• HSK 3 – Lower Intermediate: ~600 words. Handle everyday conversations and simple tasks (true basic conversational start).

• HSK 4 – Intermediate: ~1,200 words. Discuss a wide range of familiar topics with confidence.

• HSK 5 – Upper Intermediate: ~2,500 words. Read media/news and communicate fluently in many situations (often required for undergraduate study).

• HSK 6 – Advanced: ~5,000+ words. Understand complex written/spoken Chinese and express yourself naturally (often required for graduate programs).

HSK 3.0 (New 9-Level Scale)

• Elementary (Levels 1–3): Focuses on basic survival and simple communication.

• Intermediate (Levels 4–6): Focuses on general fluency and interactive communication.

• Advanced (Levels 7–9): A single test tier for advanced learners, researchers, and professional environments, evaluating writing, translation, and nuanced literature.

• Note: The new HSK also integrates a separate spoken test known as HSKK (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced).

You can check official updates and syllabus information through the Official Chinese Testing International Service Network.

2. TOCFL System (Taiwan)

Used primarily in Taiwan, the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) uses traditional Chinese characters and maps closer to international standards:

• Novice (Novice 1 & 2)

• Band A (Levels 1 & 2): Basic proficiency

• Band B (Levels 3 & 4): Intermediate proficiency

• Band C (Levels 5 & 6): Advanced proficiency

3. CEFR Comparison (A1 – C2)

While there is no official direct translation, the global Common European Framework of Reference roughly aligns as follows:

• A1 – A2: HSK 1–2 (Basic survival)

• B1 – B2: HSK 3–4 (Independent / conversational fluency)

• C1 – C2: HSK 5–9 (Advanced professional or near-native mastery)

• Which character set you prefer (Simplified or Traditional)
