Divided by zero
Any number divided by zero is undefined in mathematics.
Why can't you divide by zero?
• The inverse operation fails: Division is the opposite of multiplication. If 6 ÷ 2 = 3, then 3 × 2 = 6. However, if 5 ÷ 0 = x, then x × 0 must equal 5. No number can satisfy this because any number multiplied by zero is always zero.
• What about zero divided by zero? \(\frac{0}{0}\) is called indeterminate. Following the rule above, x × 0 = 0 is true for every possible number, meaning there is no single, definitive answer.
